The Institute of Supply Chain Management

Founded in 1915, the Institute for Supply Chain Management is the world's oldest supply chain management association. With more than 40,000 members in 75 countries, it is also by far the largest. But most importantly, the ISM - a member of the International Federation of Purchasing and Materials Management (IFPMM) - is the standard bearer of excellence in this dynamic field.

First in Research

The Institute conducts research into all areas of supply chain management, and is renowned for its Manufacturing and Non-Manufacturing Report on Business, considered by many economists to be the most reliable near-term economic barometer available. Alan Greenspan, Ph.D., former chairman of the Federal Reserve Board, has said of the ISM Manufacturing Report On Business "...I find the surveys conducted by the purchasing and supply managers to be an excellent supplement to the data supplied by various departments and agencies of government."

And in January of 1989, the US Department of Commerce added the Supplier Deliveries Index from the Report as a standard element to the DOC's Bureau of Economic Analysis Index of Leading Economic Indicators.

First in Education

To uphold the highest professional standards, the ISM strongly recommends that professionals earn the Certified Professional in Supply Management (CPSM) credential, citing that "...Taking the extra steps to add some initials after your name by earning credentials and certifications continues to pay dividends in the supply management profession..." and further, those "...who earned this designation reported an average salary that was nearly 13 percent more than those who have not earned their CPSM."
